About people-informed yoga

Trauma is a part of life

People-informed yoga, also known as trauma-sensitive yoga (TSY), is for everyone. Trauma is a part of life, but we do not have to live with symptoms from our trauma. Trauma is oftentimes held within the body regardless of whether or not the trauma occurred to the body specifically. TSY provides a safe place for survivors to develop a new and safe relationship with their bodies.

Trauma is stored in the body

When we experience something that is traumatic, our body holds onto the memory of that experience. This doesn’t just happen in the brain, it is in the entire body.  Since trauma resides in more than just our brain, TSY has proven to be an incredible addition to talk therapy for folks moving through their trauma.

TSY MEets you where you are

A typical TSY class places emphasis on body awareness and breath, and offers plenty of choices throughout practice. This encourages each student to explore their healthy balance of challenge and steadiness. A student is always encouraged to make their own adjustments and variations so they feel the optimal amount of safety. TSY requires no prior knowledge or experience of yoga.

TSY is not therapy

Trauma-sensitive yoga’s intention is to hold space for the whole person, and give space for a person who has experienced trauma to find safety within their own body. It pairs well as an adjunct support to various forms of therapy.
